ID Theft Protection Newsletter

Welcome to the E-newsletter for Identity Theft protection, providing you with breaking news, alerts and information to protect yourself from the fastest growing crime.

Medical Identity Theft occurs when someone uses a person's name and sometimes other parts of their identity -- such as insurance information -- without the person's knowledge to obtain medical services or goods.

Medical identity theft can threaten lives as well as wallets

  • Medical identity theft frequently results in false entries being put into existing medical records, and can involve the creation of fictitious medical records in the victim's name which could be life threatening.  For example, if a false blood type had been recorded and you end up in a serious car accident, disastrous consequences could occur.

Difficult to Recover From.

>Medical Identity Theft is the most difficult type of identity theft to fix after the fact. Victims do not have clear pathways for recourse and recovery. For example, victims do not have the legal right to demand correction of their medical information that was not created by the provider or insurer currently maintaining or using the information.

What Can You Do to Protect Yourself?
  • Examine the explanation of your benefits and your medical bills and health records regularly. If you see unauthorized charges contact your insurance company and your provider immediately.
